Michael Potter wasn’t born bad. If he lacked faith, it was because there was no one to teach it to him. As the child inexorably grew into a monster, an unsuspecting world became his playground. A phone call interrupts the Franklins peaceful Sunday afternoon. Jerry has to go to work to fix a problem with a cargo rocket, scheduled for launch that evening. Jerry’s wife, Sheryl, complains to no avail, while his son Dustin is disappointed to lose dad for the day. A lonely waitress entices a handsome stranger, Michael Potter, to a nearby spot in the desert a rarely used missile launch area. She doesn’t suspect that Potter is a dangerous sociopath. At the launch site, Jerry doesn’t see the stranger sneaking up behind him. Potter attacks. They fight and the unconscious Jerry is locked in the cargo rocket as it is launched into space. Stealing Jerry’s car, Potter finds a picture of Sheryl. She reminds him of his first love and Potter decides he must have Sheryl at any cost. Meanwhile, Jerry, assumed dead by his family and coworkers, wakes up in the cargo rocket and wonders if he can survive. After weeks of stalking Sheryl, Potter realizes her son is going to interfere with his plan to possess her and decides he must kill the boy. Potter follows mother and son to a thrilling climax on the edge of the Grand Canyon. CHASM is a psychological thriller that would appeal to fans of Michael Crichton or Arthur C. Clarke. A little sci-fi, a lot of character and story, wrapped up in a fast-moving narrative that draws you in.

I was attracted to this novel as a Sci Fi, but this is really more a psycho thriller rather than Sci Fi. The portion of the plot on where one the central character gets marooned in a space ship and spends months all alone up in space is nice, but frankly, it is used only as a means of making the character lost and taken for dead. This objective could have been achieved using almost any other ploy, for example, as is done in many movies where a character meets with an accident and loses his memory to temporary amnesia. The point is, there is no real science in the Sci Fi bits. An excellent example of how to treat this idea of being marooned in Space is Andy Weir's 'The Martian' that I read sometime back.

So, overall, this was an entertaining and a light read, but since I was expecting Sci Fi, which it didn't turn out to be, I was left a little disappointed.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a well told story that had every element covered...very creative in the way it tied all together. I would recommend this book
I highly recommend this book. Wow! Dave is incredibly talented writer!!! It's hard to believe this is his first novel. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was hooked from the beginning. I could not put it down all the way to the last sentence. I felt like I was reading a book by Preston & Child. (I really like that style. I've read every Preston & Child book, plus each book by the individual authors). Dave definitely has the ability to capture your attention and thoughts and immerse you deep into a fantastic story. Great job and I look forward to your next book. I'll definitely be purchasing it!
I really enjoyed this book. Reading about living in space for months under the circumstances written was fascinating. One would wonder whether this could really be acomplished by a human being. The subplot regarding the main character's family was exciting and kept me reading. I found the thoughts of the author on the subject of life and death interesting as well. I would recommend this book.
good character development and read. Pulls you in and story moves along at a relatively fast pace. Would recommend for vacation read.
I absolutely loved this book. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down until it was finished. Then I was upset that it was over because I wanted it to go on forever. Fantastic read, don't miss it.
One of the best stories I have read in a long time.Kept my interest from the first page to the last. Read the sample first, left me hungry for more... purchased the book, now waiting for the sequel from Dave Felder.
First time author? Dave writes better than most pros today....Read CHASM you won't be disappointed.
I was able to finish this book, so I suppose it could have been worse. However, the technology as described in the book just didn't gibe with what I see in the "real" world.

I get it that the author likes electric cars; he refers to them throughout the book. But the biggest problem that electric cars face is their short range. There are ways around this, but the author just chooses to wish away the problem.

There's a cargo rocket to the Moon that plays a major role in the novel. The way that the cargo rockets are used is that they're sent to lunar orbit, sit for a couple of years, then are fetched by the colony. The cargo rockets carry perishable goods. I can't think of a good reason to send the supplies to the Moon years before they're needed. Those resources could be used for more pressing needs.

Currently there are elaborate procedures used to keep cargo clean and secure. By the time of this novel, the rocket is in the desert without security, and a worker can just open up the hatch. Interesting.

Without providing too many spoilers (and I suspect that mentioning this is a spoiler, so you may wish to stop reading now), but the cargo rocket contains a large amount of empty space. Wasted empty space. Lots of it.

There are other obvious issues with the science, which kept coming up and hitting me upside the head. So I really can't review it well.

On the other hand, as a thriller, it had the advantage of keeping me reading. And that's worth something.
