"There are no ghosts in this story, and I don't believe in them anyway. But I do imagine what it would be like if he were here now. I imagine what I’d say to him if I could talk to him, know him, or even be his friend.

I have this vision of a boy who’s really cool, and I like him so much better than all these kids around me.

It’s been like this ever since the night of the Sophomore Dance when we first heard that a boy from the next town over had died. That was the news that spread like an airborne sickness last May 5th. All of us in our prom dresses and tuxedos, shouting from limousine windows Did you hear it? Did you hear?
Some kid from Westfield was murdered tonight."

In this novel, "Ghost of a Boy," a high school Junior from wealthy Fairfield tells the story of her fascination with an unsolved murder in a neighboring town. When she crosses the tracks, she finds a history of twisted secrets and a cult-like group of friends protecting the boy’s troubled sister – all just three miles away.

Think of “Juno” narrating Donna Tartt’s "The Secret History," Alice Sebold’s "The Lovely Bones," or Sue Monk Kidd’s "The Secret Life of Bees."

Ghost of a Boy edition by Dave Champoux Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

After reading the promotional information and the two five star reviews, I was excited to read this. After finishing it, I was extremely disappointed.

This book is in desperate need of an editor. It is poorly formatted: there are blank pages everywhere and odd chapter numbering. It was not checked for spelling or grammar. There is a complete lack of consistency: a character's name changes and characters randomly pop up where they shouldn't. I was very surprised to learn from the author's bio that he has two higher learning degrees in writing and that he teaches writing.

The promotional information and other reviewers all discuss how unique the character's voice is. It isn't. It is like the author watched the first twenty minutes of Juno (you know when she just keeps talking and talking) and decided that is how coming-of-age girls truly talk inside their heads. It isn't. The promotional information even says "think of 'Juno' narrating Donna Tartt's 'The Secret History', Alice Sebold's 'The Lovely Bones' or Sue Monk Kidd's 'The Secret Life of Bees'" - don't, those novels are vastly superior. Cath is self-absorbed, pretentious, snobby and a bully. Also, if Cath was a real person I would be concerned about her mental health.

This book is absolutely not a ghost story and I do not feel it is a mystery either. I understand from the promotional information and other reviews that it is supposed to be a lite ghost story, but it isn't. The title is very misleading as is the other information given about it. There is no ghost. There are no true mysterious elements to the story. This book needs to be placed in a different genre in the Kindle eBook store.

The reason I gave it two stars and not one is that it has potential. If an editor helped the author fix it up and if it was marketed differently it could be a fine book.

Engaging characters, tension, mystery along with a perceptive and often funny peek into the head of a precocious high school girl--it all makes for a great read. Anyone who has been to high school in the last 50 years will recognize the landscape and love the dialogue. Good work!
